At Sierra Madre Search and Rescue (SMSR), we believe the best rescues are the ones that never have to happen. Through our Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) efforts, we aim to educate the public, share practical safety tools, and inspire responsible outdoor recreation.
We partner with schools, community groups, outdoor clubs, and local agencies to host PSAR events, informal, approachable events that cover everything from basic wilderness safety to how to get help if you’re lost.
These events help us stay connected to our community, share our mission, and most importantly, keep people safe in the mountains.
What We Teach at PSAR Events
Our team shares real-world knowledge, built from decades of mountain rescue experience. Topics often include:
The Ten Essentials – A must-have list for every hiker or adventurer. Read the full blog →
How to Plan Ahead – Trip planning tips that can prevent an emergency before it starts. Read the full blog →
What to Do if You Get Lost and How to Get Help in the Backcountry– Simple steps to increase your chances of being found quickly and safely. Read the full blog →
We tailor our message to the audience, whether it’s a trailhead outreach table, a classroom of students, or an interactive booth at a community fair.
Want to Partner With Us?
If you’re planning a community event, safety day, school program, or outdoor fair, we’d love to be involved. Hosting a PSAR booth is a great way to engage your audience with hands-on demonstrations, friendly volunteers, and life-saving knowledge.

Why It Matters
Every year, SMSR responds to dozens of calls for lost or injured hikers, many of which could have been prevented with basic knowledge and preparation. Our PSAR efforts help reduce rescues, save lives, and build a safer outdoor community.
Help us spread the word. Share our blogs, attend an event, or bring us to yours.
Together, we can turn prevention into the most powerful rescue tool we have.
